Why consider a tiled roof repaint?

Roof tiles can become porous over time due to various factors such as weathering, UV exposure, and general wear and tear. Porosity often develops as tiles age and their protective glossy coat wears away, allowing moisture to penetrate the material. This can lead to issues like water ingress, mold growth, and reduced thermal insulation.

The Roof Painting Process

  • Inspection: We’re qualified roofers, we’ll inspect the roof to identify any cracked or loose tiles/Colorbond sheets. Then we’ll if the if the pointing needs renewing, check seals along the roof. Whatever the case, we’ll give an honest report of anything we note.
  • Clean: We’ll power wash the entire roof with 4000 PSI gurneys to remove stubborn algae, when done properly this will not cause leaks despite the common belief that because leaks from power washing are the result of the operator aiming the gun underneath the tile or shingle, we clean roofs in a meticulous way and working from top to bottom in a downwards manner. Roofs must be properly cleaned prior to painting for maximum adhesion and lifespan. For extremely flaky roofs we will spend longer with the gurneys to completely remove the old paint for best finish possible.
  • Repair: Any tiles/metal sheets that need to be replaced will be sourced and fitted. Minor cracked tiles can be sealed and don’t need to be replaced.
  • Repointing: If necessary, we will repoint the ridge caps to give a nice new seal before painting. This can also really compliment the finished look of the roof as painted decaying pointing’s never look quite as clean and fresh.
  • Primer/Sealer: Next will will use a Primer/Sealer combo onto the dry roof that penetrates deep into the tiles and allow the paint to properly stick.
  • Apply Roof Paint: At last, using our spray guns for maximum and even coverage, we will deliver a stunning finish gloss finished for your tile roof and satin for your Colorbond roof that is sure to last for years to come.

Yes, a responsible roofing company should always be insured.

No, it’s not safe for anybody to just hop on their roof without working at heights training where there are multiple hazards. You need to do the repair right, following a YouTube video may point you in the right direction but we’ll do it right the first time and with a guarantee.

That being said, gutter cleaning may done by yourself. Again safety is a concern, you’re much better off with experienced eyes doing the cleaning who will be able to identify damage as they go along.

Myself, Mark or one of my more experienced guys will come out on a select day for general site inspection and to get an idea of the scope of the work such as if we need roof rails, how bad the current paint is, any repairs or cracked tiles that need to be replaced. From there we can quote you an accurate price and show you the range of Dulux colours to choose from.

Repairs, if small, can be done within 1 day, as can the re pointing if wanted/needed. Often the painting and repointing go hand in hand. If repointing is done, we will have wait for this to dry before can commence the full roof clean.

The cleaning process for an average sized house is typically 1 full day, while not a technical job, it is slow going as we need to ensure we properly remove grime using our high powered petrol gurneys to ensure a sufficient paint adhesion. Now, if there is previous old paint there that has begun to peel, this can become a 2 day process as each section will need more blasting time to remove it all, painting over old peel is a big no no.

Once the roof is clean, we will need to wait for it to dry and find a nice sunny day to begin painting. Numerous coats are generally recommended and thus sufficient drying time is needed between. This can make the painting process 2-3 days depending on the scope of work.

If the repair is under 20% of the existing roof area then we are generally good to go but changing the structure, such as the pitch or an extension as such. For larger scales repairs that do require a permit, we will file this on your behalf, no need to worry.

Painting its self not require any permit and owners are free to choose any colour so long as they choose.

No, if the roof is in good condition and we see no reason to make any significant repairs there is no need to remove solar panels, it is an additional cost with no real benefit. We will mask and tape up the panel to keep them clean and will paint as far as we can underneath that only painted roof will be visible from the ground. The tiles and panels that are also covered by panels in a way are also getting there own protection from the elements and UV.

Yes, as tiles age they lose there glazed finish and become porous. This is when they are at their weakest and most vulnerable to moisture. A protective membrane aims to replicate and replace the glaze making water repel and grime/algae unable to sit in the tile.
